Dates

Dates are an Ayurvedic medicinal plant that grows in India. The fruits of this plant are used for eating. It is a yellow brown berry-like and slightly long fruit. A fruit contains only one seed and the pulp around it contains 60 to 70 percent sugar. Dates start to ferment quickly, so date fruits are dried in the hot sun. Dates lose 35 percent of their weight during drying.

It is a tree in the family of palm trees such as Aracaceae i.e. palm, coconut. Its wet fruits are also called dates. Also dried dates are khariq. The scientific name of this plant is Phoenix dactylifera. This tree has been cultivated in North Africa and Middle East Asia for at least 5000 years. It is still cultivated in the desert regions of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Iran, Iraq and Pakistan.
