The author of Ayurveda , Sushruta , has mentioned six types of food described in Ayurveda . It is a Sanskrit verse That verse is as follows –

भक्ष्यं भोज्यंच पेयंच लेह्मं चोष्यंच पिच्छिलम्।
इति भेदाः षडन्नस्य मधुराद्याश्च षड्रसाः॥
Food and drink and licking and drying and mucus.
Thus are the differences of the six foods and the six tastes, beginning with sweet.

Types of food described in Ayurveda

Indian dishes are made in so many different ways that you don’t even think they would be divided into a category. Ayurveda Sutras are formulated in the form of answers in one sentence. This is a very big feature of Ayurveda. When you say Tridosh, you can understand that Vaat, Pitta, Kapha and Triphala are in one word. There is no need to write so many words frequently. What the body is for medicine is also for food.

The six juices are sweet, acid, salt, bitter, pungent and alkaline. The diet is also classified into 6 parts.

1) Bhojya – Foods that can be eaten by chewing are foods e.g. Varan Bhat

3) Charvya –substances that require chewing.e.g. Chivda, roasted gram, shegdane etc.
4) Lehya – licking food eg honey chyavanprash, shrikhand etc.

5) Choshya – those who extract juice by chewing e.g. Mango, sugarcane etc.

6) Panka – drinkable food. For example. Syrups, beverages, water, milk pans, etc.

All of this together makes up your diet. Any substance is in one of these 6 categories. These 6 types should be in the diet. They are mainly light when digested and heavy when digested.
In Ayurveda, the classification is so agile that all the substances are divided correctly. The diet should be sixfold and should be of the above six types. Taking too much of the same juice and the same type can be troublesome.
