Fennel

 

Fennel is an aromatic plant. Fennel is a plant belonging to the Apicaceae family and its scientific name is Pheniculum vulgare. Plants such as cilantro, ova and carrot also belong to the APAC clan. Fennel is native to the Mediterranean region and is cultivated in many countries. However, the largest production of aniseed is in India. Below that, the countries that produce it are Mexico, China, Iran and Bulgaria. In India, fennel is mostly cultivated in Rajasthan, Gujarat, northern part of Maharashtra and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.

Dill is 1–1·5 m. It is an erect tall growing perennial plant. Its trunk is hollow. After the flowers and fruits come, the above ground part of the tree withers and dies. But the tuber remains dormant in the soil. The leaves are jointed and jointed. 45 cm. are long. It divides into many segments and their subbranches are very narrow (0·5 mm.). The flowers are numerous, small and yellow in large umbel-like inflorescences. Such a flower is called Samyukta Uchhatra. Fruits greenish yellow and 4–10 mm. The long and dry pale brown nut fruits are called aniseed. The dried fruit splits into two parts. Each part has five kangaroos and the grooves have oil ducts.

Anise has a distinct smell and taste mainly due to its volatile compound anethole. Fruits contain carbohydrates, B-group vitamins, vitamin K and potassium, phosphorus and magnesium etc. There are elements. The fruits are aromatic, carminative and diuretic and are effective against high blood pressure. Fennel is used in India mainly as a spice, as a mouthwash after meals, and for medicinal purposes. In Europe and North America, fennel is used as a spice, the leaves are used in salads, and the tubers are eaten. It grows like a weed along roadsides as well as in open spaces. It has become a nuisance and invasive weed in parts of North America and Australia.

Anise: Another plant that bears fruits similar to anise is found in Europe and North America. Its name is Anise and its fruits taste like fennel. Anise plant belongs to the family APAC and its scientific name is Pimpinella aniseum. She is Ms. 1 m. grows tall. Leaves at the base of the stem are simple and 1–5 cm. long, while the upper leaves are feather-like and divided into leaflets. The flowers are small and white and come in umbel-like inflorescences. Fruits 3–6 mm. They are long and oblong and crack when dry. They are called Anise or Aniseed.
