Ashwagandha / Winter cherry : English name Winter cherry; Classical name Withania somnifera is an Ayurvedic medicinal plant that grows in India. She is also known as Askand, Ashwagandha, Dhorkamuni, Dhorgunj, Kamrupini. It is an important plant in Ayurveda treatment. It is known as Indian Ginseng. This plant is Vrishya and Vajikar. ‘Ashwagandha Vidhara for old age.’ Such a saying is famous.

It is a small, tender perennial shrub 35-75 cm. Grows up to. Its branches spread out from the central trunk. The leaves are dark green in color, dull white above, oval in shape. The leaves are usually 10–12 cm (4–5 in) long. Flowers are small, green and bell shaped. Ripe fruits are orange-red in color. These fruits are called Kamunya in dialect. Each fruit contains many small seeds. These fruits are fondly eaten by birds, insects and ants. The germination capacity of the seeds is low. The roots are 30-45 cm long, radish-like, 2.5-3.5 cm thick. The outer color of the roots is brown and the inside is white. These roots are mainly used in Ayurveda.
Chemical constituents of Ashwagandha / Winter cherry

The concentration of alkaloids in Ashwagandha roots is 0.13 to 0.31 percent. It contains considerable vidanine alkaloids, which constitute 35 to 40 percent of the total alkalinity.

It has two varieties.
Desi- It is found in forests.
It is grown by sowing. Its roots are used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Aja Ashwagandhadi Leham, made with Goat meat broth and Ashwagandha, is used in Ayurveda medicine as a weight gainer and tonic.
